Caller Name on Outgoing Calls
Hello,
If I place a call using your service can I control both the name and number of the outbound caller ID?
Thanks
Justin

Hi Justin,
Just a heads up that I'm checking on the caller ID name and should know tomorrow. The caller ID number is completely controllable. I suspect the answer is yes for name, too, with the caveats that it's a manual process (so couldn't change all the time) and that it's not fully supported - that is, there's a chance it could go away in the future.
I'll update you tomorrow. Thanks,
Troy

Hi Justin,
Just an update that we don't permit defining the outbound caller ID name, only the caller ID number. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.
Thanks,
Troy

Hi Troy,
Thanks for the response. This appears to be a limitation that is imposed by
your competitors as well. I think I have a work-around though (call-forward
a POTS toll-free number and use that number as the source caller ID).
How hard is it to get support for streaming MP3 files without having to
upload them to your server first? Your website mentioned that its possible.
Same deal with more than 50 simultaneous calls.
Thanks
Justin

Afternoon Justin,
My pleasure. Yeah, I think it's kind of an annoying restriction on our part. We'll be researching whether there's a workaround. One challenge for us is that we work with multiple carriers, and abstracting away the differences in features/capabilities isn't always possible.
For playing an MP3 by URL, we don't currently support realtime streaming. That's partly because we haven't found a good solution to , and partly because it's an implementation challenge.
What we did instead is make it really easy to programmatically post a file, and provide a standalone command-line script and a curl example for it:
http://help.cloudvox.com/faqs/getting-started/sound-file-formats (at the end)
Often this works quickly enough - the post-upload delay before it's usable is 2-20 seconds, usually about 5.
This isn't a solution for all cases, but handles a lot of them, and for the ones it handles, is pretty elegant.
More than 50 simultaneous isn't too hard. The challenge we had with larger numbers is that we don't like the word "unlimited" because it's meaningless -- nothing scales fast enough to handle 0->10,000 calls in a second. Moreover, above 50 concurrent calls usually entails some kind of advanced planning -- we'd rather have a phone call or IM conversation to learn what you're trying to do and what gotchas might exist (whether related to Cloudvox or not).
For example, an app generating more than 50 calls from a single smaller ratecenter can max out the central office trunking or cell tower backhaul. While it's not technically our fault, it makes the resulting app experience suck. Stuff like that, caller ID or DTMF issues, and other relics of the PSTN are a lot more common with higher volume.
That 50 call limit is somewhat arbitrary, sort of shorthand for "if you need more than that, talk with us first so we can make sure we're a good solution and we hold up our end of the bargain."
Anyway, if you'd like to talk further about that, feel free to give me more details or we can chat a bit in realtime.
Cheers,
Troy

That upload process will probably work for now.
I just setup an account to start testing it.
Thanks
